When you are in the need to search for something on the internet, you usually go to a search engine. Google, Yahoo, or Bing may come to mind. But have you ever noticed that when you type in something to search, there are advertisements that come up along the side of the results page. This is called search engine advertising or SEO, and it's even more powerful than advertising on Google.

This term can be correlated with other terms like pay per click and sponsored search. Sure it can be like that, but the main idea is that you will see advertisements based on the keywords you used when initiating a search. Companies that utilize search engine advertising, make it so that when a user types in specific keywords, an ad for their business will show up on the results page. When done correctly, a business can make it so that when their keywords are typed in, the results will be near the top or on the first page of results.

Search engine advertising is very practical in the sense that it isn’t used when people do not want to see it. Again, the advertisements come up when a particular user searches for specific keywords. If you were a business, think about it. When results come up and you are near the very top, a user will look at your business name for a few seconds. Those few seconds can make a big impact because they have the ability to check out what you are selling and most likely buy from you. You have not put any pressure on the user at all, they have come to you because you were on the first page of their search results. If this was traditional advertising, a user will see things that they will have no need for and probably overlook them. Another way to think about it is a time battle. Internet users have become very judgmental in what they look for. If the result only contains one keyword from the eight they typed in, chances are they will not click on your business and move on to the next result in a millisecond. Now if seven of the eight come up, then the chances of users clicking and staying on your website is almost guaranteed. Your search engine advertising method has done the job.

Search engine advertising is only half the battle though. Sure, you have targeted who you wanted and they are viewing your site, so now what? You have to make sure that your business highlights what it has to sell. You have to convert your new visitors into buyers. Making each page more and more product specific, more about the basics, will be the best possible way to achieve the sale. It is all up to you.

Search engine advertising is today's marketing key. Having results being number one or two on a search engine is gold. You have the visitor’s attention and now you have to reel them in. Take the time and effort to think of all popular and unique keywords that your completion haven’t thought of yet or used. You will have a head start and a better chance of generating a bigger cash flow. And let's face it...it's better than letting Google advertise your business for a fee!
